For a perfect family getaway, keep these essential safety and logistical points in mind:

Transportation

Use a private A/C van for comfort. Use the Southern Expressway (E01) for beach transfers to save 2-3 hours.

Safari Safety

In Udawalawe, stay seated and keep limbs inside the jeep. Never feed animals or use flash photography.

Ocean Caution

Only swim in designated "safe zones" in Hikkaduwa and Bentota. Rip currents (diya wel) can be strong.

Temple Dress Code

When visiting the Temple of the Tooth (Kandy): Shoulders and knees must be covered for all family members. Light-colored (white) clothing is preferred. Remove shoes and hats before entering the sacred grounds.

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo (Bandaranaike International Airport - CMB)

  • Arrival at CMB Airport. Meet your private driver and transfer to your hotel.
  • Rest after the flight. Explore the hotel pool or take a gentle evening stroll at Galle Face Green.

Stay: Colombo (1 night)

Day 2-3: Pinnawala & Kandy Heritage

  • Logistics: 3.5-hour drive from Colombo.
  • Visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage during feeding time (9:15 AM or 1:15 PM).
  • In Kandy, explore the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens—perfect for kids to run and see giant bats.
  • Evening visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Stay: Kandy (2 nights)

Day 4-5: Cool Nuwara Eliya & Farm Life

  • Logistics: 3-hour scenic drive or 4-hour train ride.
  • Visit Ambewela Farm for fresh milk, pony rides, and a "New Zealand" style landscape.
  • Enjoy a boat ride on Gregory Lake and let kids enjoy the playground and swan boats.
  • Explore a tea factory to see how your favorite brew is made.

Stay: Nuwara Eliya (2 nights)

Day 6-7: Wild Udawalawe

  • Logistics: 4.5-hour drive descending from the hills.
  • Visit the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) to see rescued baby elephants being fed (safe viewing from a distance).
  • Enjoy a private 4x4 safari in Udawalawe National Park. Expect to see large herds of elephants and water buffalo.

Stay: Udawalawe (2 nights)

Day 8-9: Historic Galle & Hikkaduwa Glass Boats

  • Logistics: 3-hour drive to the South Coast.
  • Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort (UNESCO Site). It's a safe, pedestrian-friendly area for a family stroll.
  • Head to Hikkaduwa for a Glass Bottom Boat tour to see coral reefs without getting wet.

Stay: Galle/Hikkaduwa (2 nights)

Day 10-11: Snorkeling & Turtle Conservation

  • Safe snorkeling at Hikkaduwa Sanctuary (low current area).
  • Travel to Bentota. Visit a local Sea Turtle Hatchery to learn about conservation.
  • Enjoy a Madu River Safari through mangroves and visit "Cinnamon Island."

Stay: Bentota (2 nights)

Day 12: Departure (CMB Airport)

Travel Reminder: From Bentota, the airport is a 1.5-hour drive via the Southern Expressway. We recommend leaving at least 4.5 hours before your flight to ensure a stress-free departure with kids.

  • One final breakfast by the ocean before your comfortable transfer back to CMB Airport.
