The Blue Flag Initiative

This route features the 12 beaches identified by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) for international eco-certification. Expect high safety standards and pristine environments.

Day 1: Arrival & Negombo Sands (Candidate 1)

  • Arrival at CMB Airport. A short 20-minute drive leads to Negombo, famous for its wide sandy beach and historic Dutch canal.
  • Explore the Negombo fish market and enjoy a sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Stay: Negombo (1 night)

Day 2-3: Kalpitiya Lagoon (Candidate 2)

  • Logistics: 3-hour drive north to the Kudawa beach area.
  • One of the best spots in the world for Kite Surfing and dolphin watching (seasonal).
  • Experience the wild, untouched beauty of the northwestern coast.

Stay: Kalpitiya (2 nights)

Day 4-6: The East Coast Gem - Nilaveli (Candidate 3)

  • Logistics: 4.5-hour drive to Trincomalee.
  • Relax at Nilaveli Beach, arguably the most beautiful on the island.
  • Take a boat to Pigeon Island Marine National Park for world-class snorkeling.

Stay: Nilaveli/Trinco (2 nights)

Day 7: Pasikudah Shallow Bay (Candidate 4)

  • Logistics: 2.5-hour drive south.
  • Pasikudah is famous for its semi-circular bay where you can walk hundreds of meters into the sea with water only waist-deep.

Stay: Pasikudah (1 night)

Day 8-9: Arugam Bay - Surfer's Spirit (Candidate 5)

  • Logistics: 3-hour drive south.
  • Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's premier surf point and a top social hub for beach lovers.
  • Evening visit to Pottuvil Lagoon for a quiet boat safari.

Stay: Arugam Bay (2 nights)

Day 10: Goyambokka - Tangalle (Candidate 6)

  • Logistics: 4-hour drive to the Southern tip.
  • Goyambokka Beach is a secluded paradise with turquoise waters and palm-fringed coves.

Stay: Tangalle (1 night)

Day 11-12: Mirissa & Polhena (Candidates 7 & 8)

  • Mirissa is the hub for Whale Watching. Famous for its "Coconut Tree Hill" viewpoint.
  • Visit Polhena Beach in Matara, a safe, shallow bay perfect for spotting sea turtles in the wild.

Stay: Mirissa (2 nights)

Day 13: Unawatuna & Hikkaduwa (Candidates 9 & 10)

  • Explore Unawatuna’s pristine bay and the nearby Japanese Peace Pagoda.
  • Head to Hikkaduwa for vibrant nightlife and the famous coral sanctuary.

Stay: Hikkaduwa (1 night)

Day 14: Bentota Gold Sands (Candidate 11)

  • Bentota offers high-end luxury and vast stretches of golden sand.
  • Ideal for water sports: Jet skiing, windsurfing, and speed boat river safaris.

Stay: Bentota (1 night)

Day 15: Mt. Lavinia & Departure (Candidate 12)

  • Travel back towards Colombo via the Southern Expressway.
  • Final lunch at Mount Lavinia Beach, the historic coastal suburb of Colombo.
  • Direct transfer to CMB Airport for your flight.
