Ratnapura, Udawalawe & Adam's Peak

From the Glistening Gem Mines to the Majestic Elephant Wilderness.

Ratnapura: The Gem Capital

Ratnapura, which translates to "City of Gems, " is the world-renowned center of Sri Lanka's gem industry. For centuries, it has produced some of the finest sapphires, rubies, and emeralds in existence. The city is nestled in a lush, fertile valley surrounded by tea and rubber plantations, offering a unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty.

Beyond the gem mines, Ratnapura serves as a gateway to the Saman Devalaya, a historic temple dedicated to the deity Saman, the guardian of the region and Adam's Peak.

Udawalawe: The Elephant Kingdom

Udawalawe National Park is a sanctuary of vast grasslands and majestic herds. It is most famous for its high density of Sri Lankan elephants, which are easily spotted roaming across the open plains of the park's dry-zone landscape. The majestic reservoir at the center of the park serves as a vital life-source for the diverse wildlife that calls this wilderness home.

A heart-warming highlight is the Elephant Transit Home (Ath Athuru Sevana). This unique facility cares for and rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves, providing them with the necessary medical attention and milk until they are strong enough to be released back into the jungle. Visitors can witness daily feeding sessions, a truly unforgettable experience that highlights Sri Lanka's commitment to conservation.

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

The majestic Adam's Peak, or Sri Pada, is a sacred pilgrimage site for four major religions. At its summit lies a footprint believed by Buddhists to be the Buddha's, by Hindus to be Shiva's, and by Christians and Muslims to be Adam's or St. Thomas's.

The ascent, particularly during the pilgrimage season (December to May), is a profound spiritual journey. Witnessing the sunrise from the summit, with the triangular shadow of the peak projected onto the morning mist, is a truly life-changing experience.
