While Mirissa and Unawatuna are stunning, they have become incredibly popular in recent years. If you are looking for an empty patch of golden sand, a swaying palm tree, and the sound of crashing waves without the crowds, you have to look a little closer at the map.

Here are 5 pristine, relatively undiscovered beaches along Sri Lanka's famed southern coast.

1. Silent Beach (Amanwella)

Located near Tangalle, Silent Beach completely lives up to its name. It is a long, sweeping crescent of white sand flanked by coconut palms. Aside from a single small beach shack serving fresh coconuts, the beach remains entirely undeveloped and tranquil.

2. Hiriketiya Bay

While surfers have known about "Hiri" for over a decade, it remains somewhat of a hidden gem for the average tourist. This enclosed, horseshoe-shaped bay boasts incredibly calm waters near the shore, making it perfect for swimming, while a reliable left-hand break sits further out for surfers.

3. Goyambokka Beach

Another Tangalle secret, Goyambokka is a series of small, rocky coves rather than one long stretch of sand. The dramatic rock formations in the water break the waves, creating calm, jacuzzi-like pools of seawater which are entirely safe for swimming.

4. Talalla Beach

If you want a beach to yourself, drive just east of Matara to Talalla. Spanning nearly 2 kilometers of soft, powdery sand, Talalla is backed by dense palm groves rather than hotels. You will likely share this beach with local fishermen reeling in their catch.

5. Dikwella Beach

Protected by a string of coral reefs and sandbars, Dikwella offers some of the calmest, safest swimming waters on the entire south coast. It is wide, flat, and remarkably serene.

Helpful Tips

  • Best Time to Go: The South Coast is dry and sunny from November through to April.
  • Safety: Undiscovered beaches often lack lifeguards. Always ask locals about riptides before swimming deep.
