While the southern beaches receive the lion's share of Sri Lanka's tourism, those "in the know" quietly look eastward. Trincomalee, a historic port city on the northeast coast, boasts some of the most spectacular, calm, and pristine coastline in all of Asia.

If you're visiting between May and October, this is where you want to be.

1. The Waters of Nilaveli

Just a short drive north of Trincomalee town lies Nilaveli. It is less a town and more a continuous, straight ribbon of blindingly white sand spanning over 4 kilometers. The waters here are remarkably calm, flat, and an intense hue of turquoise. Swimming here feels like floating in a giant, warm swimming pool, making it exceptionally safe for families.

2. Snorkeling at Pigeon Island

A few kilometers off the coast of Nilaveli sits Pigeon Island, a protected marine national park. A quick boat ride takes you to this rocky outpost surrounded by spectacular coral reefs. Snorkeling here is world-class. You are almost guaranteed to swim alongside blacktip reef sharks (harmless) and green sea turtles within minutes of diving into the water.

3. The Grandeur of Koneswaram Temple

Built upon the imposing, sheer cliffs of Swami Rock (often called "Lover's Leap"), Koneswaram is one of the most important Hindu temple complexes in Sri Lanka. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is heavily detailed in vibrant, gilded architecture. Standing on the cliff edge looking out over the massive natural harbor below is breathtaking.
