If you travel from the deep south of Sri Lanka all the way to the northernmost tip, you'll feel as though you've crossed into an entirely different country. The landscape shifts to arid palmyra palms, the architecture reflects deep Hindu roots, and the cuisine undergoes a spectacular transformation.
Jaffna Tamil cuisine is distinctly different from the Sinhalese food found in the rest of the island. It is heavily influenced by South Indian flavors but uses local northern ingredients, resulting in darker, richer, and incredibly spicy curries.
1. Signature Jaffna Crab Curry
You simply cannot visit the northern peninsula without eating crab. Caught fresh from the Jaffna lagoon, the crabs here are massive and sweet. The signature Jaffna crab curry is slow-cooked in a dark, robust blend of roasted spices (Jaffna curry powder), featuring heavy notes of fennel, black pepper, and chili. It is incredibly messy to eat, but licking your fingers is half the experience.
2. Odiyal Kool
Odiyal Kool is the iconic dish of Jaffna””a thick, hearty seafood broth that locals consider an absolute delicacy. It is brewed using a mix of crabs, prawns, cuttlefish, and various fish, thickened with "Odiyal" flour (extracted from the palmyra palm root). It contains a mix of long beans, spinach, and fiery chilies. Historically, it was communal food shared among neighbors.
3. Dosais and Vadais
Given the intense South Indian influence, Jaffna is the best place in Sri Lanka to find authentic vegetarian fare. Head to the streets surrounding the massive Nallur Kandaswamy Temple in the early morning. You will find tiny eateries serving paper-thin, crispy Dosais (fermented lentil crepes) and fried Ulundu Vadais, served with a brilliant array of coconut chutneys and hot sambar.
4. Rio Ice Cream
After enduring the scorching northern sun and the blazing heat of Jaffna spices, relief comes in the form of Rio Ice Cream. This iconic establishment has been serving enormous, brightly colored sundaes for decades. Expect scoops of vanilla drowning in fluorescent jelly, fresh fruit, condensed milk, and cashews.
